Austria’s Interior Minister Karl Nehammer has announced that he was appointed the new leader of the Austrian People’s Party and candidate to the post of Chancellor.He added that he will now have consultations with Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen concerning his candidacy for the post.”I can inform you that I have been unanimously appointed as the leader of the Austrian People’s Party and at the same time as a candidate for the post of the chancellor for consultations with the federal president,” Nehammer told reporters.
He also proposed Alexander Schallenberg, who is the current chancellor, as the new foreign minister.
Earlier, the ORF broadcaster reported that the Austrian People’s Party elected Interior Minister Karl Nehammer as its leader and Austrian Chancellor.
This comes after Schallenberg, who has been serving as chancellor of Austria since 11 October after Sebastian Kurz resigned following corruption allegations, announced on Thursday he would step down when his party agrees on their next leader. Earlier this week, Kurz said he was quitting politics but added that he plans to “prove in court” that charges against him are ungrounded.
